Md Sohel, son of Delwar Hossain of Purba Auliapur village in Sadar upazila of Patuakhali, has filed a false case against Md. Nechar Uddin, editor and publisher of the daily Sagorkul published from Barguna, member of the executive committee of the regional newspaper council, staff reporter of the Daily Morning Glory, journalist of the Daily Jugantor and president of Bamna Press Club. Case number 6 (10) 24 of GR Khilgaon Police Station.
Md Sohel, son of Delwar Hossain of Purba Auliapur village in Sadar upazila of Patuakhali, filed the case with the Dhaka CMM Court on September 30. Whose CR case number is 356/24. The court directed the officer-in-charge of Khilgaon Police Station in Dhaka to treat the complaint as an FIR within five working days. The officer-in-charge of Khilgaon Police Station filed the case on October 5. Case number 6 (10) 24 of GR Khilgaon Police Station.
According to the case statement, Md Sohel, 34, a member of Dhaka Metropolitan South unit of Bangladesh Nationalist Road Transport Sramik Dal, was injured in police firing during the anti-discrimination movement of students and people. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Prime Minister's Finance Adviser Salman F Rahman, former Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi, former minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury, former MP Shamim Osman, former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, former Detective Branch (DB) chief Harun-or-Rashid are accused in the case.They are former DMP commissioners Md Habibur Rahman, DB Sanjit Kumar Roy, Mehedi Hasan, DB Ramna Md Humayun Kabir, DMP CTSB DC Rahmat Ullah. The other accused in the case are Shyamoli Paribahan owner Ganesh Chandra Ghosh, Irfan Selim, former finance minister Lotus Kamal, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Atiqul Islam, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam, and 60/70 unnamed people.
The accused are Md Nechar Uddin, editor and publisher of the daily Sagorkul, executive committee member of the regional newspaper council, staff reporter of the Daily Morning Glory, journalist of the Daily Jugantor and president of Bamna Press Club. However, at the time of the incident mentioned in the case, at 5:30 pm on August 4, 2024, Md. Nechar Uddin was staying at his village home in West Shafipur village of Bamna upazila of Barguna district.
Another accused in the case is Bukabunia Union Parishad Chairman Saidur Rahman Sabuj, a resident of Purba Shafipur village in Bamna upazila of Barguna.
The plaintiff of the case, Md Sohel, said, "I do not know Md Nechar Uddin, editor and publisher of the daily Sagorkul, executive committee member of the regional newspaper council, staff reporter of Daily Morning Glory, journalist of Daily Jugantor and president of Bamna Press Club. "I know the three accused in the case are Sheikh Hasina, Quader and Kamal.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Regional Newspaper Council, Barguna Press Club, Bamna Press Club, Patharghata Press Club, Betagi Press Club have strongly condemned and protested the false case against Daily Jugantor journalist, editor and publisher of the daily Sagorkul published from Barguna, member of the executive committee of the Regional Newspaper Council, staff reporter of Daily Morning Glory, journalist of Daily Jugantor and president of Bamna Press Club Md. Nechar Uddin. Amtali Press Club and Taltoli Press Club. At the same time, the leaders urged the professional journalists to be immediately exempted from such false cases.
In a statement, Bangladesh Regional Newspaper Council President Md Jahangir Hossain Manju and General Secretary ABM Bazlur Rahman Khan Rumi said filing false cases against professional journalists will curtail the freedom of the press. If such false cases continue against journalists, the media workers of this country will be forced to go for a greater movement to protect professionalism. Therefore, to ensure an environment for independent journalism, the filing of false cases against journalists should be stopped, they said.
